Departmental Overview
The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.

Responsibilities
- Applies advanced quality and reliability approaches in determining the feasibility of engineering designs and design for manufacturability and test.
- Plans, organizes and supervises quality and reliability process and systems for design, construction and testing of space flight instruments.
- Quality assurance supervising effective engineering design and integration of all engineering fields such as mechanical, electrical and electronic.
- Develops and reviews quality provisions for aerospace component procurements.
- Integrates the quality activities covering several engineering specialties and detailed knowledge of Aerospace processes.
- Attends design reviews with NASA in matters related to engineering design and quality assurance.
- Carries major responsibility for quality assurance and safety objectives in relationships with NASA, Subcontractors and UCB staff.
- Works with spacecraft management in meeting quality and safety requirements, safety design and verification as needed; provides all safety design and verification data to NASA for integration to the spacecraft.
- May lead a team of lower level professional engineers and technicians.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced skills in the planning, development and construction of space systems, from concept development through operation.
- Detailed knowledge of regulations and NASA policies for Aerospace Quality.
- Knowledge and skills in quality and reliability engineering covering disciplines electrical, electronic or mechanical.
- Detailed knowledge of manufacturing processes for space hardware.
- Advanced quality knowledge to effectively integrate multiple engineering fields to solve complex engineering issues.
- Detailed experience in solving problems in space flight hardware and the processes for problem resolution.
- Skills in project management to include organization, planning, quality assurance and scheduling.
- Detailed knowledge of assembly and test sequencing.
- Skills in specialized engineering fields related to quality and reliability engineering.
- Detailed knowledge in areas of quality management such as Six Sigma or AS9100.
Education/Training
- Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Post-graduate level course work in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The full pay scale for this position is $112,100.00 - $216,700.00. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $112,100.00 - $164,400.00.
- This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position and eligible for full UC Benefits.
