Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory, boarding and day school with enrollment of 770 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson is a mission driven school that aims to help students shape joyful lives while instilling a passion for learning and achievement to prepare them for success in school and beyond. The core values of the community are safety, trust, respect, belonging, and inclusion.
In keeping with Stevenson’s core values, we seek candidates who demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion. Stevenson is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by law. Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Stevenson School is seeking a Preseason Community Facilitator. Preseason begins two weeks before the start of classes for student athletes. This experience is integral in the construction of community at Stevenson School as many connections are made, friendships formed, and team bonds created during these two weeks. The role of the Community Facilitator for preseason exists to foster a sense of community, both in a residential capacity and team-based capacity, through activities outside of athletics and practices.
The first week of preseason is held for the football team. All fall sports are included in the second week of preseason and will require more facilitation. Facilitators are expected to reside on campus in Stevenson-provided lodging from August 5th through August 19th, 2023 or August 12 through August 19th, 2023 depending on their schedule. Community facilitators are expected to perform a variety of activities throughout the course of the day as per the pre-season schedule. These activities may include beach walks, hikes, team building activities, game nights, and other events which will be built into teams’ athletic training schedules outside of practice. Facilitators will work with both individual teams and combined groups throughout the day while practices are not in session. Programming will be co-designed throughout the summer leading up to the preseason period. Community facilitators will work on a rotating schedule during the evenings (once every four days) to make sure students are accounted for and foster community within residential spaces. Facilitators may be asked to perform other duties as deemed necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in outdoor education or team-building facilitation in a group setting
- Experience working with high school students in a residential environment
- Technical outdoor skills (hiking, ocean safety, climbing…) a plus
- First Aid / CPR certification required
- Ability to respond to and report incidents should they arise
Pay and Benefits
- Lodging on Stevenson’s Pebble Beach Campus
- Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included at on-campus dining hall
- Pay rate of average $150 per day (7 - 15 total days)
Logistics and Clarifications
- 48 students reside in each dorm - 2 dorms in total. One community facilitator will be "on duty" each day and be responsible for checking students in at lunch, dinner, and lights out. We aim to hire 2 facilitators for the first week and 4 facilitators for the second week.
- Facilitators on duty will be immediate point people in the dorms but will be made aware of chain of response during training on August 5th (ultimately referring any incidents to our Athletics Director for any emergencies).
- Facilitators do not need to be involved in any brainstorming or coordination prior to the pre-season as we plan on having all of our activities planned prior to your arrival. However, we do want to give facilitators a fair amount of autonomy in programming if there are activities you would like to adjust/tweak/spearhead during the week.
- Most activities will take place on campus or within walking distance. For larger group activities, we intend to provide bus transportation as frequently as possible. We require facilitators to pass a DMV license check and expect that there will be a few smaller events located on the peninsula that may require driving a small group of students. ?
