Departmental Overview
The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is the UC system's premier space sciences research facility and one of the preeminent university laboratories in the country for space research. SSL's primary goals of fostering outstanding research in space-related sciences and providing education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL is led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, and focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space, but also includes research with the potential of leading to future space experiments, and the theoretical research that is tied into the experimental and observational programs. Since its inception in 1959, SSL has participated in over 50 NASA space science missions, including the Apollo, Mars, and Explorer programs, as well as many international space missions.
The Role:
We are looking for a specialist in the development and operation of Thermal Vacuum and other test facilities for space flight qualification of spacecraft instrumentation, with knowledge of the special mission assurance, safety and environmental issues involved. This person uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional in this specialized engineering phase of a major development effort. They demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. In depth knowledge of vacuum systems, equipment construction, theory and operation, thermometry, data collection techniques and automated controls is required. Vibration systems, ESD controls, cleanroom construction and maintenance, and DI water systems is desired.

Responsibilities
- Provides professional engineering information and advice to systems engineers and management in area of environmental testing facilities.
- Plans, organizes and supervises technical staff engaged in manufacture or test of test apparatus.
- Consults and collaborates with Principal Investigators (PIs), shop personnel, vendors and other component engineers.
- Carries system engineering responsibility covering relevant engineering specialties engaged in the vacuum and test equipment level.
- May supervise or coordinates technicians and shop personnel involved in assembly and testing of component parts.
- Develops specifications for vacuum and test equipment parts procurements; works with other research organizations in the development of the component.
- Performs the recording and reduction of test data for instrument design and evaluation purposes.
- Gathers, analyzes and prepares information and prepare reports with respect to feasibility, engineering design criteria and performance of their components.
Required Qualifications
- Provides professional engineering information and advice to systems engineers and management in area of specialty.
- Plans, organizes and supervises technical staff engaged in manufacture or test of test apparatus.
- Consults and collaborates with shop personnel, vendors and other component engineers.
- Carries system engineering responsibility covering relevant engineering specialties engaged in the vacuum and test equipment level.
- Performs the recording and reduction of test data for instrument design and evaluation purposes.
- Skills in the design, development and construction of space system Thermal Vacuum test platforms, including successful qualification of multiple successful aerospace products.
- Skills in supervising lower level technical staff to ensure objectives are met in adherence to quality standards.
- Skill in cleanroom design, procurement, construction, setup, operation and maintenance.
- Skill in planning, design, construction, assembly, verification and operation of spacecraft instrumentation test facilities.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, computer, contamination control and thermal monitoring systems and their employment in space systems test programs.
- Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.
Education/Training:
- Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Post-graduate level course work in related area required.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years experience in environmental testing setting or equivalent.
Salary & Benefits
- This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position and eligible for full UC benefits.
- This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $101,300.00 - $192,300.00.
