Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Carpenter performs the full range of skilled carpentry work including new construction, remodeling of existing spaces, and repair and maintenance work. The Carpenter builds, remodels and repairs various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures. Renovates existing spaces, adding, or removing windows, doors, and walls, installing wall covering, ceilings and floors. Incumbent installs and repairs drywall, ceiling, and floor tiles; constructs cabinets, counters, shelves, benches, partitions; installs and repairs modular furniture; installs and repairs door and window frames; hangs doors and installs windows. Installs signs, display boards, blinds, fixtures (soap and paper goods dispensers, etc.); repairs furnishings (tables, chairs, desks, lab benches, etc.)
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), temporary position expected to end on or before November 30, 2023. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., duties include some evening or weekend work but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
SDSU Facilities Services is a customer-service based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 235 employees (full time and students) and supports approximately eight million square feet of building space (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land.

Education and Experience
These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a carpenter's apprenticeship program.
Licenses and/or Certifications
Valid California Driver's License or have the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
Key Qualifications
- Knowledge of the latest methods, materials and equipment used in the carpenter trade and thorough knowledge of the proper use and care of the tools and equipment used in that work.
- Ability to perform skilled carpentry work (building, installing, and repairing structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings, and cabinetry); operate and maintain hand and power carpentry tools.
- Ability to make rough sketches; read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; estimate materials and labor cost of standard carpentry and maintenance and repair work; select appropriate lumber types and grades.
- Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual/computerized record keeping systems.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,134 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
This temporary position offers medical benefits with several plans to choose from.
CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,787 - $7,396 per month.
