RSCH AND DEV ENGR 1 (Machine Shop Engineering Technician)
Department Description
The Mechanical Shop is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the cyclotron to include engineering and fabrication of parts and components for the cyclotron. The Shop provides support for research and teaching needs and mechanical services to campus community at large. Provide support to faculty, researchers, and graduate students on basic machining functions, consultation, design and fabrication of scientific apparatus.
Job Summary
Under general supervision and working as part of a team, provide machine shop services and support for research, teaching, and cyclotron needs. Provide mechanical services to campus community at large. Provide support to faculty, researchers, and graduate students on basic machining functions; consultation, design and fabrication of scientific apparatus.
RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after 3 weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.
POSITION INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Stoop, bend and lift materials weighing up to 50 Lbs.
- Handle and operate machinery and equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Occasionally work in areas which may have been exposed to radiation, as permitted by safety protocols.
- Participate in Radiation Dose monitoring and regulation program.
- Occasionally work outside normal shift hours and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
- Experience as a Journey level manual machinist.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
- Advanced skill in precision machining to close tolerances using lathes, mills, and other machine tools.
- Knowledge of basic scientific fabrication/construction techniques to construct scientific apparatus to withstand extremes of pressure, of temperature, various stresses and strains etc.
- Knowledge and skills of separate machining characteristics of wide variety of materials including application of different materials used in scientific apparatus based on their characteristics, i.e., hardness, weld ability, grade, machine ability, and other critical factors.
- Skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously amidst constant interruptions and noise.
- Working knowledge of safe shop practices and machining principles with all types of machine tools and equipment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to create and interpret detailed blueprints and sketches to complete projects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education/Experience:
- Experience in CNC machine tool programming and operation.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
- Skills to weld with hard and soft solders, and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding techniques, in a variety of ferrous and non- ferrous metals.
- Proficiency with standard office software (Word, Excel, Adobe, PowerPoint, email) to accomplish tasks.
- Interpersonal and communication skills to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

Background Check
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
