DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The University of California Observatories (UCO) is a Multi-Campus Research Unit of the University of California, with headquarters at the UC Santa Cruz campus. UCO operates on behalf of astronomers on eight UC campuses and two national laboratories and is comprised of extensive technical facilities, a business office, telescopes and support facilities at the Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton. UCO provides UC's scientific and administrative interface to the Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and the Thirty-Meter Telescope international project, and supports the training of astronomy Ph.D. 's throughout the UC system.

JOB SUMMARY
Uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in a specialized engineering field on a major training and / or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. The UC Observatories Model Maker uses mechanical, fabrication and design concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments including designing mechanical and electrical components for instrument mechanical stages and testing. The Model Maker works to support the development of new instrumentation for the Lick Observatory and Keck Observatory. This position also participates in the testing of hardware at the subsystem level and integration level during prototyping, and final verification steps. This engineer level position works to advance skills in specialized cooling and vacuum technology and to support research efforts and works on assignments of moderate scope. Finally, this positions supports the overall instrument development and test efforts of UCO, troubleshooting systems and maintaining and repairing the existing equipment in the technical laboratories used for instrument development.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $6858.33 - $8016.67 / monthly at 55%. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES
40% - Instrumentation
- Participates and leads aspects of construction assembly, laboratory and field testing of equipment and instruments in the technical laboratories. Work subject to review by a more senior level Engineer.
30% - Engineering Design
- Under general supervision, designs and prepares engineering plans and specifications of moderate complexity for novel laboratory equipment and instruments.
20% - Testing
- Tests, maintains and commissions cooling systems for use in instrument test and verification (e.g. Cold room, clean room etc.)
10% - Reporting
- Gathers and analyzes data; prepares formal engineering reports, drawings and status reports.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Experienced in assessing and evaluating mechanical designs to push for improvements and ease of machining, integration and assembly.
- Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.
- Working knowledge of instrument design to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
- Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
- Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
- Effective written communication skills.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Analytical and judgement skills to conduct analysis and develop appropriate recommendations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
