DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Division of Physical and Biological Sciences (PBSci) comprises seven comprehensive departments offering a full range of bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees (Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics); three smaller departments offering graduate degrees in interdisciplinary fields (Astronomy & Astrophysics, Microbiology & Environmental Toxicology, and Ocean Sciences); and one small graduate professional program (Science Communication). A full complement of graduate programs is enriched by access to state-of-the-art lab facilities and equipment and a variety of field study environments. Research is organized within individual departments, as well as formal organized research units, research centers, and interdisciplinary research clusters. The division is the principal home to three major organized research units: the Institute of Marine Sciences, the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics, and the University of California Observatories/Lick Observatory. Research affiliates include Federal and State agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife {CDFW) Marine Wildlife Center.
PBSci Facilities staff members are responsible for planning, construction, renovation, relocation, and general oversight of approximately 630,000 assignable square feet in approximately 30 buildings on the UCSC residential campus, Westside Research Park, and the Coastal Science Campus.

JOB SUMMARY
Under direction of the Physical & Biological Sciences (PBSci) Facilities Manager, the PBSci Woodshop Manager manages the PBSci Wood Shop operation, and supervises the PBSci Receiving and Delivery operation. The PBSci Woodshop Manager provides consultation and design services, estimates job costs, and plans, schedules, and coordinates shop work. The PBSci Woodshop Manager manages lab renovation projects for the division, inspects work and manages budgets.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $90,000 - $110,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES
30% - Design/Consultation/Project Management
- Provides consultation, design, and project management services to faculty, staff, and others. Designs new, unique research and teaching instrumentation and furnishings, according to client specifications consisting of oral or written instructions or rough sketches.
- Consults with and advises clients in conceptual design to create new equipment or furnishings that are not readily available from other sources. Designs scope ranges from minor modification to complex design without benefit of specifications requiring development of new fabrication techniques. Finished products include but are not limited to: cabinetry, countertops, storage solutions, ADA workstations and accessories, gas cylinder restraint system installs, A/V system installations, custom furnishings, bulletin boards and frames.
- Designs and fabricates specialized tools and methods for safe transport of very heavy, large, and high-value equipment, to protect people, equipment, and building structures. Creates, presents, and reviews detailed drawings with client for input. Provides reference drawings when applicable.
- Ensures compliance with applicable codes and ADA guidelines for all work performed.
- Works closely with PBSci Facilities project managers and analysts on all phases of short and long term remodel & renovation projects for the Division. Initiates work order requests and coordinates work with Physical Plant trades and outside vendors.
- Other duties as assigned.
25% - Fabrication/Repair/Moves Support
- Constructs, repairs, and modifies laboratory cabinetry, lab and office furnishings, working from sketches and oral instructions. Establishes and verifies accuracy of all dimensions and clearances. Work is often performed in active research laboratories in the PBSci Woodshop, or field.
Establishes materials and methods for each project application. Materials include: laminates, veneer, acrylics, polypropylene, polycarbonate, PVC, epoxy and phenolic resin countertop materials, medium-density fiberboard, melamine, plywood, solid woods, sheet metals, etc. - Operates a variety of rough and precision machine tools and heavy equipment.
- Works with PBSci Facilities staff, campus movers, and contractors to manage the physical relocation of offices and laboratories. Facilitates utility and structural disconnect and reconnect of various scientific apparatus. Advises researchers, campus project management team, contractors, and vendors of necessary steps to ensure safe transport of specialized equipment. Oversees and assists with loading and unloading, unpacking, and installation of various types of equipment such as optical tables, microscopes, lasers, centrifuges, glove boxes, lab furniture, fume hoods, and various other specialized instrumentation.
- Supports the PBSci Facilities operation in preparation and response to building utilities outages and emergencies. Transports supplies and equipment as needed.
20% - Management & Administration
- Organizes, schedules, and directs the workflow of the Wood Shop, including the following: establishing priorities, estimating costs, and setting schedules.
- Evaluates time-sensitive requests against existing workload and commitments to determine feasibility of meeting all obligations prior to scheduling new work.
- Prepares job estimates, tracks orders, materials, and billable hours, and works with PBSci Facilities and administrative and finance staff to submit Transfer of Expense documentation for processing. Manages materials inventory, ordering, reconciliation, and billing. Oversees a large inventory of stock items, cutting tools, and small supplies.
15% - Supervision
- Supervises one carpenter-specialist and one senior building maintenance worker in carpentry design, fabrication, and installation; building construction; general and specialized moves; and use, maintenance, and repair of large and small power tools.
- Supervises the division's Receiving and Delivery Manager. Understands business operations sufficient to hire, manage performance, provide staffing backup, and otherwise respond to operational issues.
5% - Building Plan Review
- Performs thorough review of design and construction drawings and specifications for projects ranging from major science buildings to small renovation projects.
- Provides detailed comments on building and cabinetry design and construction, including materials and methods.
- Represents the division in design and value engineering meetings to ensure maximum cost-effectiveness, function, and quality of the final product.
5% - Safety and Training
- Ensures proper, efficient, and safe use of shop equipment and other heavy equipment at all times. Actively maintains required shop safety documentation.
- Ensures attendance of all shop personnel in safety trainings to stay current on hazard mitigations.
- Recognizes, reports, and suggests mitigation for unsafe equipment and/or environmental issues, or issues recognized in the field.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Demonstrated ability to independently design, document, and provide cost estimates for simple and complex equipment, furnishings, and related apparatus.
- Demonstrated experience managing a diverse workload, including estimating, designing, plan review, fabrication, purchasing, accounting, training, supervision, and prioritizing of staffing workloads.
- Management and supervisory experience sufficient to hire, train, and manage staff performance.
- Experience working independently from minimal oral and written instructions, including sketches and working drawings.
- Ability to communicate effectively and clearly exchange technical information with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population of widely varying cultures, backgrounds and technical skills.
- Extensive demonstrated experience in professional carpentry and woodworking, including substantial use, inspection, maintenance, and repair of all tools common to the trade, including table saws, joiners, planers, shapers, lathes, band saws, sanders, edge-banders, boring machines, vertical panel saws, etc.
- Thorough knowledge of wood, plastics, metals, and other materials, including material movement and coefficients of expansion. Thorough knowledge of finish materials, including product compatibilities and requirements for safe-handling.
- Computer skills sufficient to prepare email correspondence, author concise documents, utilize project management software, use basic spreadsheet and calendaring programs, and ability to learn UCSC accounting software (Infoview) and procurement systems (CruzBuy).
- Knowledge of shop mathematics.
- Demonstrated ability to model safe work practices at all times.
- Ability to perform construction and repair work in a laboratory, office, shop, and/or common areas.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience constructing equipment composed of plastics using wood shop equipment.
- Experience working in an academic and/or research environments.
- Ability to produce detailed designs and shop drawings using AutoCad, Sketchup, SOLIDWORKS or similar.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- Ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
- Ability to conduct outdoor site visits, including use of required personal protective equipment, as required to conduct investigations, inspections, or view work in place.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
- The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
- Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
- Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
- Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
- Ability to work an alternate schedule, extended hours, and possible weekend or holiday hours on occasion, in response to critical work issues (e.g., large move, major utility shutdown, etc.) or emergencies.
- Ability to perform significant physical work over extended periods while adhering to safe work practices and maintaining an awareness of safety at all times including: lifting and processing large and heavy (up to 100 pounds) materials, often for most of a day; climbing and working from ladders; working overhead to install cabinetry and other items; working in uncomfortable positions in hot and cold environments (e.g., mechanical rooms and cold rooms) and in close proximity to large equipment, steam piping, energized high-voltage electrical circuits, and other moving parts.
- Ability to work in proximity of hazardous laboratory materials (e.g., chemicals, mutagens, bacteria, viruses, radioactive isotopes, etc).
