DESCRIPTION
The Congenital Anomaly Research Laboratory is seeking a Staff Research Associate to join our team studying the etiology of congenital heart defects using the chick animal model. The research associate will independently design and perform research in developmental biology, performing molecular biology and genetic experiments in conjunction with mechanical manipulations. Chick embryo work will include transfection of plasmid DNA, and selection and cloning of the appropriate transformants on the selectable media. The incumbent will also maintain and grow viral vectors.
Furthermore, the incumbent will help manage the lab and be responsible for ordering/quotingequipment, organizing equipment/supplies, equipment maintenance, making solutions,writing standard operating procedures, biohazardous/chemical waste management/disposal,assisting with writing/publishing manuscripts and training of lab personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of biology, molecular biology or biochemistry acquired through a BS or BA Degree in Biology, Bioengineering, Genetics, or related field plus two (2) years of post-degree lab experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's or PhD degree in related field preferred.
Proven understanding of cell culture procedure
Demonstrated independent experience with immunostaining procedures and theoretical basis for immunocytochemistry.
Expertise with molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, sequencing reactions, transformation and purification of existing plasmid DNAs, microinjection, genotyping, and cloning
Proven knowledge and skill working with sterile equipment and supplies. Experience with the operation of laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, balances, and pH meters.
Expertise with principles of basic light microscopy; experience with compound microscopes.
Skill, ability, and willingness to learn new laboratory techniques, lab equipment, and computer hardware/software rapidly and as needed. Ability and willingness to read scientific papers as directed in order to stay abreast of developments within the field and relating to current experiments. Ability and willingness to identify safety concerns and address them with appropriate communication and action.
Skill to recognize, assess and quickly resolve problems or malfunctions with lab equipment or facilities including performing minor repairs or contracting appropriate parties to schedule repairs and maintenance
Proficiency in the ability to prioritize, follow through on tasks, and handle multiple varied tasks. Skill to prepare and maintain with completeness and accuracy a variety of laboratory records, files, and notebooks.
Proven knowledge of PubMed or library literature search to identify relevant research papers, journals and books.
Experience in experimental design and analysis, with limited input from the PI, in the execution of research projects or portions of such projects, through the independent planning, organizing and performing of experiments.
Strong skill, knowledge and ability to train new lab assistants.
Successful, positive interpersonal and oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations to discuss and understand day to day laboratory affairs, research plans, results and ideas with PI and other lab personnel in a constructive, professional, and pleasant manner. Skill to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals. Skill to present information clearly and concisely. Ability to maintain confidentiality of matters related to work.
Knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Skill in maintaining purchasing records, steady levels of lab supplies, and training others in purchasing procedures.
