DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Department of Performance, Play & Design is a multi-disciplinary, academic unit of the University of California Santa Cruz. It houses three degree-granting programs in Theater Arts, Dance, and Games & Playable Media. As part of the curriculum, the Department supports productions of plays, dance concerts, and other performances and installations. JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Operations and Facilities Manager, this position serves two functions:
- Scene Shop Management: Oversees the day to day operation of a 1,080 sq. ft. scene shop and 352 sq. ft. metal shop within the Theater Arts Center. Also supervises a student prop shop manager and 1,152 sq. ft. prop shop. Duties include: Supervision of student crew which is diverse across many forms of difference, in accordance with department DEI policies. Asset, tools, materials, hardware and paint - use and supplies tracking - with repairs and restock ordering as needed. Student training of safe tool and equipment use as well as theatrical fabrication techniques. The shop manager and crew are also responsible for all non-IT related support within the Theater Arts Center. This includes theater venue upkeep as well as classroom and studio support (classroom furniture changeovers, laying marley dance floors, assisting with ad-hoc faculty requests for events and day of class needs. Tracks and updates scenic asset inventory for use and upkeep.
- Theatrical Fabrication Oversight: Works with faculty and student scenic and properties designers to create build drawings, bid sheets, and material purchasing requests. Leads the (paid) student fabrication crew as well as students working in the shop for academic credit in the construction and load in of all scenic designs or scenic elements for any PPD sponsored events. Events may include theatrical productions, open studio installations, PPD special events (showcases, workshops, class showings), etc. Tracks shop supplies, scenic, and properties budgets.
This position also assists with developing and implementing operational procedures and signage for all users within all PPD facilities.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $80,300 - $85,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES
30% - Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise and train, following DEI best practices to create an environment where everyone can contribute equally, staff and students in fabrication and installation of theatrical production elements from design and design specifications provided by theatrical designers in specific production area(s) such as scenic fabrication, welding and rigging.
- Attend department staff and production meetings when available.
- Prepare shop drawings and sketches for use in construction using CAD (VectorWorks and or AutoCad) and manual drafting. Advise and train students how to produce scenic drawings for construction. Meet with faculty (and student) designers to understand concepts and desired scenic elements to be produced in shop.
30% - Fabrication
- Determine construction techniques and details of construction / installation and creating construction drawings, patterns, jigs, and samples.
- Attend technical / dress rehearsals and consult with directors / designers regarding notes, changes, and / or additions. Administer storage and disposal of theatrical production elements.
- Maintain shop facilities and equipment and coordinate with senior managers regarding theater facilities and property upkeep.
- Identify equipment needs, with knowledge of emerging fabrication technologies; coordinate repairs; participate in planning of major alterations of existing facilities or development of new facilities.
20% - Safety Management
- Assist with safety workshops, lecture demonstrations and instructional lab demos for applicable technical courses. This includes advising with curriculum in the area of scenic construction and related areas of technical theater.
- Supervise/ train users (staff and/ or students) in safe, proper practices of theatrical construction and installation and in safe use, proper handling, and upkeep of all machinery, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment in accordance with federal, state, OSHA, and Cal OSHA guidelines and regulations.
- Know and follow job safety procedures, attend required campus health and safety training, and proactively promote safety in the workplace.
- Promptly report accidents, injuries, close calls, unsafe practices and unsafe conditions. Be aware of the work environment and situations, analyzing them for safety and productivity. Immediately report threatening behaviors, and emergencies to the supervisor or appropriate university office. Complete ladder safety as well as other area specific safety certificates as required.
- Attend campus DEI trainings and implement fair, equitable and inclusive practices throughout the department's shops.
15% - Administration
- Train / supervise students in laboratory settings associated with theatrical production; may evaluate students in laboratory work.
- Identify/ resolve workflow problems; train, assign work and schedules; work with Operations & Facilities Manager to resolve personnel problems.
- Deliver and set up finished scenery to multiple theater sites using a university owned vehicle.
- Order scenic construction materials and direct delivery of materials.
- Oversee PPD vehicle usage and user scheduling.
- Monitor budgets for limited areas of supervision, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed upon budgetary limits.
5% - Professional Development
- Actively pursue opportunities to advance personal and professional knowledge relevant to the profession.
- Maintain familiarity with current technologies applicable to administrative systems.
- Undergo professional development, especially in the area of DEI, as appropriate.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent professional experience in technical theater/theatrical scenic fabrication, scene shop management or related field of study.
- Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED Certification or have the ability to obtain it within the 60-calendar days of hire
- Experience working with communities and individuals of diverse backgrounds and orientations, such diversity including social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds, the LGBTQ+ community, and varying levels of physical ability.
- Mastery level knowledge of technical aspects of theatrical scenic fabrication methods, engineering, rigging and paint treatment.
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate complex information and instructions to diverse constituencies.
- Good problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
- Practical skills and knowledge of scenic fabrication.
- Practical knowledge of theatrical drafting and drawing Including CAD software. (Vectorworks and or Autocad).
- Ability to recognize and complete shop upkeep projects as needed.
- Practical knowledge of GSuite Applications (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, etc.) and Zoom.
- Demonstrated commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of, and interest in, methods for supporting emerging forms of theater and artistic production including 3D printing, fabric printing, projection mapping and installation of digital media.
- Good knowledge / skills In financial and personnel administration and experience in budgetary management.
- Expertise in non-Western production forms, and in community as well as professional theater.
- Good working knowledge of shop safety practices and theatrical safety practices including OSHA and Cal-OSHA rules and regulations.
- Experience working with faculty in teaching, advising, consulting, and grading the work of students.
- Experience working with undergraduate college students.
- Ability to perform tool upkeep.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.

- Ability to wear a respirator in accordance with the California Code of Regulations Title 8, 5144.
- Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
- Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
- Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
