Assistant Project Scientist - Autism Research
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California Davis, School of Medicine is recruiting for a full-time Project Scientist at the Assistant rank in clinical psychology and data science.
The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency in data science and clinical psychology. Appointees with Project Scientist series may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, etc.), they are not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. The Project Scientist will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
The incumbent will work under the supervision of Drs. Aubyn Stahmer and Meagan Talbott and the study biostatistician and the ability to work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1) RESEARCH (85% Effort)
Data Cleaning and Management (40%)
- Design and maintain clinical research databases using REDCap. Collaborate with team members on the design, documentation, testing, and implementation of clinical data management research systems studies. The complex study design requires special attention to detail and consideration of many factors when designing datasets; proper interpretation of raw variables may require consulting with the data collection staff and faculty with particular expertise (interviewers, clinic coordinator, clinical assessment team, etc.). Assure data quality, oversee regulatory compliance of databases submit de-identified data as required by federal and other rules and regulations, and maintain confidentiality with regard to PHI.
- Write SAS (Statistical Analysis System) and/or other software programs, as appropriate, to prepare data for analysis as needed by project collaborators. This includes constructing variables, identifying missing data problems, combining data from numerous sources, and working with many variables.
- Develops process for incorporating other external data, as needed.
- Create SAS datasets and write SAS or other statistical software code to examine univariate distributions, check frequencies and outliers, identify inconsistencies and errors or other problems, and work closely with other project team members to resolve them, including clinical staff, interviewers, and investigators.
- Properly merge datasets and construct new variables according to investigator specifications.
- Document all steps of data cleaning and variable creation.
- Prepare data for analysis and/or submissions as requested by project collaborators or the funders of the research and ensure high accuracy.
- Adhere to strict standards for confidentiality and security.
Codebook Maintenance (10%)
- The appointee will create and maintain detailed data dictionaries/codebooks and data management documentation. They will prepare codebooks for data documentation and for use in creating data entry systems. Work with other study staff to obtain exact specifications for codebooks and implement changes to data entry systems. Maintain codebooks and version control as changes are made to data collection forms and new variables are created.
Assessment Coordination and Implementation (35%)
- The appointee will conduct distance assessments with infants, children, and families enrolled in multiple studies. Assessments may include (but not limited to) TELE-ASD-PEDS; Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales; ADOS-2; cognitive assessments. They will code and score assessments in a timely manner, following study procedures. This may include generation of clinical best estimate diagnoses using DSM-V or research criteria. The appointee may provide training to staff around family-centered assessment practices and family engagement. They will develop reports regarding child and family assessment results and provide written and verbal feedback to families and facilitate discussion of assessment results with community treatment teams when needed.
- The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific field of clinical psychology and/or data science and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.
- The appointee may undertake administrative tasks relevant to the smooth running of the laboratory enterprise as appropriate. This may include:
- Providing general support for the study including the preparation of tables with basic frequencies, correlations, and other simple statistics, generating routine reports, and writing programs to answer specific questions about the study participants.
- Coordinate with third parties to obtain relevant data files and place them on the server in designated secure locations.
- Coordination and management of assessment process for incoming families, including oversight of assessment tracking, mentor and train assessment team on assessment procedures and clinical assessment skills.
- Mentor and train junior data management staff, clinical research coordinators, and/or project managers regarding good clinical data management practices. Serve as a technical resource for the project regarding good clinical data management practices.
- Participate in scientific decision making around study processes, data interpretation and development of manuscripts and presentations for academic and community audiences.
