Junior/Assistant/Associate Specialist (Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience) - Wells and Holmes Lab
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Junior/Assistant Specialist (Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience)
Wells and Holmes Lab, Department of Neurology, UCSF
The Wells and Holmes lab investigates the role of glia in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Our lab is seeking a highly motivated candidate to join our pioneering and cross-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will be responsible for iPSC cultures, molecular biology, microscopy, flow cytometry, protein expression and purification, protein validation, and basic hypothesis-driven experimentation. The candidate will have opportunities to learn state-of-the-art techniques that fuse neuroscience, iPSC biology, functional genomics, and recombinant protein engineering.
The Wells and Holmes laboratory explores how the immune system modulates the progression of Alzheimer's disease. We focus on the microglial cell-surface to determine how neurodegeneration can drive cell-surface changes that give rise to toxic microglial profiles. Our laboratory is highly collaborative and uses a combination of mass spectrometry-based discovery with iPSC models of Alzheimer's to find new targets of disease pathways. We are dedicated to unlocking hidden disease mechanisms as well as building recombinant diagnostic tools and therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegeneration.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Cloning recombinant protein and antibody constructs using a variety of molecular biology techniques including polymerase chain reaction, Gibson assembly, DNA purification, and transformation.
- Expressing and purifying proteins from bacterial and mammalian sources.
- Culturing immortalized and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) toward the differentiation of CNS cell types.
Required Qualifications:
- Appointees to the Junior rank must possess a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, cell biology, or relevant life sciences field or at least four years of relevant research experience.
- Appointees to the Assistant rank must possess a master's degree in a relevant life sciences field or a bachelor's degree with three years of relevant research experience.
- Appointees to the Associate rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant life sciences field or five years to ten years of relevant research experience.
- Candidates must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment.
- Candidate's CV must state qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One year of wet lab experience
- Expertise with mammalian tissue culture techniques including cell line maintenance, transfections, and generation of stable cell lines.
- Familiarity with protein handling, expression, and purification.
- Execution and analysis of basic cell biology experiments using automated live-cell microscopy, flow cytometry, immunodetection methods, and functional phenotypic assays.
