Departmental Overview
The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.

Responsibilities
- Designs the mechanical portions, including packaging and deployment mechanisms, of nanosatellites, scientific sensor instruments, and instrument control electronics (hereafter referred to as 'hardware') Develops specifications for aerospace parts procurements.
- Provides professional engineering information and advice to systems engineers and management in area of specialty.
- Consults and collaborates with Principal Investigators (PIs), electrical engineers, thermal engineers, shop personnel, and vendors. Works with other research organizations in the development of the hardware.
- Documents all project activities, including design and meeting notes, design analysis, component data, procurement, fabrication, assembly, testing, and integration.
- Gathers, analyzes and prepares information and prepares reports with respect to feasibility, engineering design criteria and performance of their components.
- Prepares and presents reports to NASA technical review teams.
- Designs and performs environmental simulation tests of hardware. Performs the recording and reduction of test data for instrument design and evaluation purposes.
- Plans, performs and/or supervises assembly of hardware. Addresses, troubleshoots, creates plans of action for, and documents hardware failures and other anomalies.
- Performs integration of instruments onto flight platforms (satellites or rockets).
- Supervises or coordinates lower level engineers, shop personnel, and technical staff engaged in design, fabrication construction and testing of hardware.
The ideal candidate can:
- Use skills as a seasoned, experienced professional specialized engineering phase of a major development effort.
- Provide systems responsibility covering relevant engineering specialties engaged at the instrument level.
- Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
- Provide expertise in mechanical structures, mechanisms and deployable units.
- Specialize in Microsatellites, satellites, instruments and related subsystems, solid-state telescopes, and high-temperature antennas.
- Responsible for instrument development from initial design through final qualification testing.
- Liaison in work coordination among other research institutions and to NASA technical review teams.
- Exercise judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results, building successful hardware, and proposing future endeavors.
- Responsible for activities on-site and at off-site facilities, especially for integration of instruments and launch processing with remote location of activities up to three months in duration.
- Perform successful development, fabrication, assembly and integration, and qualification of critical instruments and flight hardware.
Required Qualifications
- Thorough skills in the design, development and construction of space systems, including one successful aerospace product.
- Specialist in at least one discipline (electrical, electronic or mechanical).
- Thorough systems knowledge of other engineering specialties in order to integrate at the instrument level.
- Thorough skills in supervising lower level professional engineering and technical staff to ensure objectives are met in adherence to quality standards.
- Proficiency in multiple CAD systems, including SolidWorks and OnShape. Familiarity with other CAD systems.
- Proficiency in FEA Software, including CosmosWorks with adaptability to other platforms.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively. Ability to interface with various institutions and disciplines to effectively accomplish project goals and meet requirements. Able to generate, present, and defend designs and qualification programs to review panels and other NASA specialists.
Education / Training Requirements
- Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
Preferred Qualifications
Education
- Post-graduate level course work in related area preferred.
Licenses
- Trained in Solidworks, Solidworks Simulation, and OnShape.
- Operation of vibration table
- Operation of thermal vacuum chambers
- Clean room protocols
- ESD protection

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The full pay scale for this position is $117,000.00- 226,000.00. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $150,000.00-$190,000.00.
