Detailed Description:
The Department of Art, Architecture + Art History (DAA+AH) Facilities Manager is responsible for the overall maintenance and safety of all Visual Art and Architecture studios, shops, labs, and teaching facilities in the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: coordinates the use and maintenance of instructional and research classrooms, labs, art and architecture studios, shops, student exhibition spaces, outdoor working spaces, and faculty and student studios; supervises the DAA+AH Facilities Assistant and student workers; organizes, designs, and supervises the construction of custom equipment or furnishings and space remodeling projects to meet the changing needs of the department; analyzes departmental space needs and allocations; acquires and maintains department equipment, furniture and inventory; serves as the department EH&S Safety Coordinator, implementing State and Federal OSHA standards; and serves as the liaison to other departments and groups (on and off campus) around the use of DAA+AH space and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Overall Facilities Management:
- Ensure maximum functionality of all DAA+AH facilities and equipment. Oversee and coordinate the repair, maintenance and cleaning of all equipment and spaces including coordination with professional technicians to have equipment maintained and periodically repaired as needed. Periodically move large specialized equipment and supplies between vendor, repair facility and department.
- Coordinate with University Facilities Management to assist in developing, prioritizing, and scheduling all construction, renovation upgrades, maintenance, service, and repair to the facilities and their equipment/systems.
- Oversee communications with ITS for troubleshooting issues and updating software and equipment.
- Serve as department liaison to other on-and-off-campus departments and entities utilizing the facilities or doing business with the department.
- Hire, train, supervise and evaluate assigned staff and student employees working in DAA+AH facilities. Train staff and student employees in use and monitoring department's specialized labs, shops, studio and architecture pavilion spaces and equipment..
- Establish and apply security policies and systems that maintain security of department spaces, Student Studios, Visual Arts Center Gallery and equipment while affording appropriate access to students, faculty, and staff. Monitor facilities usage and maintenance; report problems as needed.
- Maintain a detailed inventory of all DAA+AH tools and equipment. Administer the A/V media and photography equipment check-out system and inventory. Work directly with ITS on the procurement, management and maintenance of media equipment, computers and printers, and related supplies and consumables. Maintenance and management of printers and scheduling their usage and consumables.
Budget Management & Purchasing:
- Working with the Department Chair and DAA+AH Programming Manager, manage DAA+AH supply, maintenance and equipment budgets. Purchase department supplies and tools; has purchasing authority up to $15,000.
- Make recommendations to the Department Chair regarding Budget Requests and works with Procurement to find the most cost-effective solutions for the purchasing of new equipment and furniture.
- Coordinate with Department Chair and other relevant departments to advocate for the development and expansion of art and architectural studio spaces
Shops & Studio Training:
- Serve as the central source for all DAA+AH faculty for training in the safe and proper use of all DAA+AH equipment and labs. Develop and provide regular training workshops to students and faculty in the use and function of tools, equipment, labs and software
- Promote artistic and architectural training workshops to foster creativity and innovation among students and faculty
- Schedule regular availability to demonstrate materials processes, fabrication techniques and provide technical assistance to DAA+AH students in the making and presentation of their work and projects.
Space/Equipment Analysis & Planning:
- Design and build studio, shop, and lab furniture as needed.
- Administer the allocation of Student Studio spaces and collaborate with faculty to develop and implement use policies.
- Work closely with the Department Chair and DAA+AH faculty to develop long term plans for DAA+AH spaces and equipment. Initiate solutions to meet current space needs for faculty and students.
- Assist the Department Chair and DAA+AH faculty with the drafting and implementation of facilities plans and design, equipment requests, and minor capital outlay requests.
Environmental Health and Safety:
- Develop and administer the Department's Safety Training Program, conducting periodic
- safety trainings with new and returning faculty and students. Interpret and enforce safety policies across DAA+AH shops, labs and other spaces.
- Serve as liaison between DAA+AH and Environmental Health and Safety as the DAA+AH Safety Coordinator ensuring compliance with and implementation of campus wide EH&S safety requirements. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of OSHA guidelines related to studio art and architecture facilities and act as the area OSHA liaison. Manage disposal of the department's hazardous waste in compliance with regulations.
- Maintain and update the DAA+AH Safety Manual.
Special Projects:
- Work with faculty and students in the planning and implementation of special projects and exhibitions.
- Assist with the installation of DAA+AH Open House, Senior Thesis Exhibitions, Faculty Exhibitions, and guest exhibitions.
- Assist with event scheduling and planning for the department.
- Serve as a member of departmental committees as needed or desired (Visiting Artist Lecture Series, Junior Review, Senior Thesis, etc.).
- Coordinate with staff in the College of Arts and Sciences to periodically install new artwork in the Dean's office passageway.
- Work with student curators and visiting artists to coordinate and install temporary works of art, architecture, and exhibitions across campus.
- Supervise fabrication of prototype buildings, and support collaborations between department's students and faculty and peers and colleagues from across the College and Engineering School on experimental structures.
- Collaborate with faculty, students and Programming Manager on the development and implementation of departmental professional development, studio visit program, field trips, and artists residency program.
Special Conditions of Employment:
- May require some evening and weekend work.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- BA in art or architecture, BFA in Art, BArch or related area is required
- Minimum five years experience managing art and architecture studios and/or other art-making facilities required
- Familiarity in the use of Macintosh and PC computers and Adobe Creative Cloud software
Preferred Qualifications:
- MArch or MFA in Visual Art preferred
- Familiarity and interest in Contemporary Art and/or Architecture Teaching and Practice preferred
Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to prioritize tasks, set and meet deadlines, problem solve and make important decisions.
- Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of tools, equipment, and machinery in each of the different facilities
- Working knowledge of Macintosh and PC computers
- Familiarity with health and safety practices and precautions applicable to art studios
- Background in traditional and contemporary art making processes
- Understanding of contemporary art practices and theory
- Teaching experience desirable
