Position Information
Under the direction of the Resident Director: install, repair, maintain, and improve facilities and systems that benefit and support ongoing research and teaching programs at the Granite Mountains Desert Research Center (GMDRC). These include structures, vehicles, roads, utilities as well as systems and infrastructure related to research projects. Assist with other daily operational aspects of the GMDRC, including occasional administration and user management, information systems, biological monitoring, meetings and events, research and educational programs, database management, museum collections, and public outreach activities.
The full salary range for the Steward, Sweeney Granite Mountains Desert Research Center is $23.43 - $30.91 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

Requirement Demonstrated experience using hand tools, power tools (including table saws, drills and compressors), and equipment (including tractors, hitch trailers, concrete mixers) appropriate for general maintenance and construction of buildings and grounds Required A minimum of two years construction experience with hands-on experience in multiple construction related trades including carpentry (framing, roofing, drywall, etc.), plumbing (e.g, water and propane lines), electrical, welding, masonry, and basic vehicle maintenance and repair; and knowledge and understanding of California building codes, as well as hazardous materials and general safety policies. Required Five years of general construction experience. Preferred Demonstrated experience supervising volunteers and temporary employees Preferred Basic understanding and experience in trail and barbed wire fence construction and maintenance. Preferred Demonstrated experience in design, installation and operation of residential-size photovoltaic electric and battery storage systems Preferred

Preferred Qualifications
Willing to work variable hours, including holidays and weekends; live in remote location in rustic conditions; may drive long distances and occasionally working long days to attend training, meetings, or to get needed materials and supplies. Must be on-call when necessary to respond to emergencies.
Basic computer skills including use of Windows or Macintosh operating systems. Ability to operate email, word processing and use of spreadsheets software. Proven ability to organize, file, prioritize, manage time, write clearly, and interact well with supervisors, colleagues, and reserve users.
Ability to learn and interpret to visitors the basic natural history of the reserve, including the names of plants, animals, geological formations. Become familiar with regional places, roads and history of the reserve and surrounding region.
Demonstrated ability to conduct physical labor outdoors in desert environment/wilderness setting (including snow, rain and excessive heat conditions). Ability to hike several miles over rugged terrain and lift minimum of 50 lbs.
Able to anticipate and identify potential health and safety hazards; and willingness to confront and communicate effectively, and safely, to trespassers.
Able to become sufficiently familiar with GMDRC operating procedures in order to manage the reserve in the absence of directors and other administrative personnel.
Additional Information
Basic understanding of state and federal agencies and regulatory policies that apply to research and land management issues, and general knowledge of conservation issues in relation to reserve management.
