DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Marine Physical Laboratory Division (MPL) was originally established as a Navy-orientedresearch laboratory in 1946 prior to becoming a division of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1949. MPL has offices on both the UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) LaJolla campus and at the Marine Facility (MarFac) in Point Loma. MPL is the only certified facility UC-wide for classified research and holdings. It is part of SIO's Oceans and Atmosphere (OA) Section with multi-disciplinary programs of scientific research including: ocean acoustics, signal processing, underwater imaging, acoustics of marine mammals, air-sea interaction and surface waves, upper ocean physics, ocean optics, atmospheric optics, seismology/geophysics, marine geology and geomorphology, and ocean chemistry. The MPL machine shop supports MPL and SIO research programs fabricating unique and complex instrumentation in support of exploratory technological development appropriate to applied research programs.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a highly skilled Senior Marine Mechanician.
Under general supervision, the incumbent shall:
Perform highly skilled tasks in support of oceanographic projects. Work from blueprints, rough sketches, written or oral instructions; perform senior-level skills as a machinist operating a wide range of machines in the shop, including CNC mills and lathes, ProtoTrak/manual mills and lathes, and other machining equipment.
The position also involves operating heavy equipment, including lifts and wire rope spooling winches.
While familiarity with the principles and operation of hydraulics is beneficial, we are open to candidates who demonstrate the ability to operate or build mechanical equipment or show a willingness and aptitude to learn these skills.
Responsibilities include developing, building, installing, and maintaining mechanical equipment for scientific groups for use aboard ship and in shore laboratories.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from High School and six (6) years of experience in machine shop work or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have five (5) years of experience on both HAAS CNC mills and lathes. Must have five (5) recent years of experience using MasterCam programing software to program HAAS CNC machines. Must be familiar with the principles and operation of hydraulics.
Knowledgeable in performing math (e.g. trigonometry) and calculations to operate CNC machines.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience of all machine shop equipment, including lathes, mills, grinding, cutting, horizontal boring, presses, brakes, rollers, shears, and CNC (e.g. HAAS Mills and Lathes) operations both turning and milling. ProtoTrak mills and lathes. Experience with laboratory machine shop equipment focusing on selection of materials, machine operations and safety procedures.
Excellent computer skills including computer aided design, word processing, Xcel, Cad/Cam drafting.
Ability to disassemble, perform maintenance and reassemble.
Skill to utilize available resources efficiently including electronic and mechanical test equipment, technical literature, heavy machinery, machine tools, hand tools, and transportation equipment.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills with personnel at all levels. Ability to work on multiple projects and problem solving skills.
Knowledge of operational controls and capacity of overhead hoist, fork lifts, cable truck and wire spooler.
Demonstrated ability to design and fabricate shipboard/scientific equipment specified for research expeditions.
Have basic knowledge of marine construction, and general familiarity with accepted maritime practices in workmanship and safety in order to comply with the certification requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and the ASME Code.
Ability to organize, coordinate and delegate tasks to temporary personnel.
