Position Information:
UC Riverside's Facilities Services is recruiting for a High Voltage Electrician. The High Voltage Electrician performs full journey-level work related to the repair, maintenance, service, installation, modification, troubleshooting, inspection, and monitoring of a variety of medium and high voltage (>600V - 12.47KV) electrical distribution systems and associated industrial electrical equipment. Performs planned and emergency maintenance on a variety of medium and low voltage systems, including overhead and underground distribution systems, throughout the campus community and satellite substation. Maintains industrial electrical equipment of various voltages up to and including 12,470 volts (12.47KV); performs troubleshooting, as needed, on equipment such as generators, transformers, Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) switchgear, breakers, batteries, DC systems, and Motor Control Centers (MCC) to identify and resolve electrical equipment problems. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing and maintenance (corrective and/or preventative) performed. Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings, as needed. Reviews and updates all shop logs, both paper and electronic according to updates and changes. Responds to emergency situations to mitigate and/or resolve immediate electrical concerns or safety issues. Reviews and creates blueprints/drawings, and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects according to building code requirements. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate safety concerns. Performs all job duties in adherence with University and departmental safety guidelines. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

The full salary range for the High Voltage Electrician is $50.31 - $56.65 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Educational Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Required

Completion of a certified apprenticeship program.
Required

Experience Requirements

4 years of journey-level experience as a skilled high voltage electrician, and/or completion of a certified apprenticeship training; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Required

Demonstrated experience in maintenance, repair, service, installation, modification, troubleshooting, inspection, and monitoring of medium and low voltage electrical distribution systems and associated industrial electrical equipment.
Required

Experience working in medium and high voltage environments (>600V - 12.47KV), working in and around electrical equipment and distribution lines such as transformers, switches, circuit breakers, recording instruments and control systems.
Required

Experience and/or certification of training in forklifts, lifts and/or boom truck operations.

Valid Driver License.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge and skill to prepare switch tags and perform system switching operations to isolate and place electrical equipment in a safe condition.

Willingness and ability to work weekends and holidays. Ability to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime, electrical shutdowns, emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed.

Knowledge of the National Electric Code for compliant installations and NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E for safe work practices. Ability to apply knowledge of laws, codes and regulations pertaining to high voltage electrical work, including Arc Flash, NEC, Title 24, and standard industry practices.

Knowledge of Electrical theory and terminology, and technical practices in order to plan, layout, and complete maintenance or repair needed for high voltage equipment and lines.

Skill and ability to perform repairs, fabrication, operations and maintenance of medium and high voltage electrical systems and associated equipment.

Skill and ability to use testing equipment and troubleshooting complex electrical problems and develop effective resolutions.

Skill and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work such as customers, project managers, inspectors, and other crafts, including assisting others and working cooperatively.

Ability to maintain records in work order system related to work performed, including use of computers. Ability to record information accurately as is necessary to perform the job responsibilities.

Skill and ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, drawings, instructions, and related technical materials.

Knowledge of safety and ability to exercise safe working practices pertaining to high voltage electrical work, including ensuring clearances, and working on energized lines and equipment.

Ability to perform job planning and prepare detailed estimates including labor and materials.

Ability to read, write and perform mathematics used in electrical calculations including algebra.

Skill and ability to safely operate shop equipment and tools common to the skilled trade. Skilled use and maintaining of electrical tools and test equipment such as oscillators and rotation meters, digital test equipment, fault finding equipment, ampmeters, voltmeters, meggers, graphic recorders, dressing tools, wire tongs, wire tong supports, insulated tension links, tie sticks, and insulated hoods/covers and tools.

Ability to select the correct tools, techniques, and PPE for handling specified equipment and apply knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials or situations are suspected.

Experience with electrical theory and terminology.

Experience and ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests and ability to choose the proper materials or equipment to accomplish work in the most expeditious and safe manner.

Experience using tools and equipment common to the electrician skilled trade.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and ability to provide exemplary customer service.
