Specialist - Structural Biology and Biochemistry (Verba Lab)
Multiple specialist positions are available immediately in the Verba laboratory at the Mission Bay Campus of UCSF. Verba lab (https://cmp.ucsf.edu/faculty/kliment-verba) seeks to understand the molecular fundamentals of how cells make decisions and how these processes are hijacked by disease and pathogens. To this end we use and develop variety of biochemical and structural techniques including x-ray crystallography and cryo-EM. You will learn and apply these methods to help develop inhibitors against SARS CoV2 and other viruses with a pandemic potential. The candidate will design constructs for recombinant protein expression, express and purify viral proteins. The candidate will obtain molecular structures of viral proteins and will work closely with medicinal chemistry group to guide inhibitor design and optimization. This is a multi-lab effort (https://qcrg.ucsf.edu/qcrg-avidd-overview) and is an incredible opportunity to get exposed to the different ways of thinking and methodologies which are required to go from basic science discovery to an effective small molecule antiviral. An ideal candidate is highly motivated, excited to learn, independent, curiosity driven, creative and has excellent interpersonal skills.
