Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory boarding and day school with enrollment of 770 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Divisions Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson is a mission-driven school that aims to help students shape joyful lives while instilling a passion for learning and achievement to prepare them for success in school and beyond.
Stevenson School is seeking a Director of Engineering and Applied Sciences to start
July 2025. Reporting to the Head of the Upper Division, the Director of Engineering and Applied Sciences (DEAS) will help lead the development of engineering and applied science programming in the state-of-the-art math, science and engineering center (MSEC) which is on track to open for the start of the 2026-27 school year. MSEC will showcase Stevenson School’s commitment to an integrated science and math education and unlock exciting learning opportunities that cultivate students’ creative spirits. Among other planned spaces, a fully-equipped engineering, design, and fabrication workshop will bring robotics and engineering to the heart of our campus.
The DEAS will work in close collaboration with the head of the upper division, school president, architects, project managers, and advancement team to guide both the final stages of construction and the opening of an educational space that will solidify Stevenson’s position as a leader and model in STEM education. With Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Labs, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), the Naval Postgraduate Center for Military Research in Engineering all located on the Monterey Peninsula and Silicon Valley within an easy drive of campus, the DEAS will develop and cultivate meaningful external relationships and compelling programming in collaboration with community partners. The incoming director will shape the educational experience for current and future generations of Stevenson students.
The DEAS will continue the School’s work to further evolve and enhance a cohesive program of study that capitalizes on the outstanding math and science preparation provided by the existing departments and offers opportunities for students to apply their conceptual understanding to real-world problem solving. In addition, the DEAS will supervise the teaching of courses identified as applied science, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, and robotics, and work collaboratively with upper division academic leadership to evaluate programs and faculty.
The ideal director of engineering and applied science candidate will be a dynamic and experienced leader who will bring a demonstrated record of leadership in math and/or applied sciences and success partnering with research institutions. This is a full-time, 12-month/year position based on the Pebble Beach campus. In keeping with Stevenson’s core values, we seek candidates who demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Responsibilities include:
Teach up to 3 sections of math, science, computer science and/or digital fabrication, to be determined based upon area(s) of academic and applied expertise
Develop and steward relationships with community partners such as MBARI, NPS, CSUMB, and other relevant institutions and organizations
Cultivate enthusiasm for innovation and exploration in all aspects of maker programs among students and faculty and ensure that related courses and programs feel accessible to all students
Actively seek and promote opportunities for Stevenson students to engage in research and other internship opportunities
Promote applied science activities such as the MATE robotics program
Support the continued development of and evaluation of scope and sequence of the computer science program
Participate in MSEC project completion as detailed above
Collaborate with divisional leadership and faculty in the continued development and enhancement of the PK-12 math and science sequence
Supervise the teaching of courses identified as applied science, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, and robotics
Work collaboratively with upper division academic leadership to evaluate programs and faculty
Guide and support the development of a middle division after school program to introduce robotics, engineering and design thinking to students prior to high school
Showcase Stevenson’s commitment to STEM education at admissions and advancement events

Founded in 1952, Stevenson School is a selective co-educational boarding and day school with 750 students and 30 buildings on 50 acres of land and two campuses. The 500-student upper division, comprised of grades 9-12, is located on the Pebble Beach Campus, where about 60% of students reside in six faculty-supervised dormitories; the lower and middle divisions, totaling 250 students in grades PK-8, are located on the Carmel Campus.
As an American school with a global sensibility, Stevenson is premised on a vision of education as the means by which we discover ourselves in the world and thus contribute to its transformation. We believe that one’s education is best pursued in the company of others, for others’ benefit as well as one’s own. Our Latin motto—Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re (Gentle in manner, resolute in action)—inspires humility and perseverance. Our mission includes three aims: to prepare students for success in college and beyond, to foster their passion for learning and achievement, and to help them shape a joyful life.
In keeping with this project, Stevenson seeks to:

•H...elp students to develop honor and integrity;
•Teach students to engage productively and peacefully with others;
•Nurture students’ ambitions and healthy pursuit of excellence;
•Balance convention and innovation such that we remain true to our enduring values and relevant to the emerging needs of the present generation of students.
We expect all members of our community to be:
•Devoted to our tenets of scholarship and citizenship;
•Honest, honorable, and empathetic;
•Able to examine and be responsible for their beliefs and behavior, respectful of the consequences that attend both;
•Willing to risk failure in the pursuit of wisdom;
•Committed to global literacy, environmental stewardship, and civic engagement.
Stevenson offers its students, faculty, and staff a values-driven community experience influenced by the distinctive beauty, ecological biodiversity, and contemplative culture of the Central Coast.
