Position Information:
The UCR School of Medicine is seeking a Residency and Career Advisor to provide comprehensive career advising to medical students, particularly those in their fourth year preparing for residency. This role supports students in exploring medical specialty options, setting career goals, and enhancing their competitiveness for residency programs. Key responsibilities include individual and group advising, developing and facilitating workshops, coordinating faculty advisor involvement, and creating career-related resources. The advisor works collaboratively with Student Affairs and the Residency Development Specialist to ensure successful career outcomes for students. This position offers a hybrid schedule, with three days on campus and two days remote each week.

The UCR School of Medicine's Office of Student Affairs is dedicated to supporting medical students throughout their academic journey, from admission to graduation. The department offers a comprehensive suite of services, including academic advising, career and residency guidance, financial aid assistance, wellness resources, and student life programming. Its mission is to foster student success by providing equitable access to resources and cultivating a diverse, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. The office also manages key programs such as the Office of Career & Residency Advising, the Office of Student Support & Wellness, and various pathway and leadership initiatives, all aimed at preparing students to serve the healthcare needs of Inland Southern California and beyond.

The full salary range for the Residency and Career Advisor is $61,000 - $106,800 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $83,900 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Demonstrated progressively responsible student affairs experience in a medical school or research university setting, including effectively advising and counseling students.

Minimum Requirements

Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.

Thorough knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.

Ability to design and modify computer applications to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills.

Ability to work with people from diverse cultures.

Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations related to the responsibilities of the position, including Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Working knowledge of admissions requirements for the UCR School of Medicine.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Working knowledge of concepts, principles and practices of event planning, production and public relations. Organizational ability to coordinate student programs and events.

Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with schools, universities, community organizations and other institutions.

Demonstrated organization and prioritization skills necessary to meet daily, weekly and monthly deadlines.

Working knowledge of UC, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective applicants and the public.

Working knowledge of academic programs, including curricula, admissions requirements, and financial aid programs at UC.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.

Knowledge of and experience with Banner or equivalent student records systems.

The Career Development Specialist will advise medical students on a full range of career exploration and development plans for medical specialty selection or alternate career plans, including group advising/coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and tools to support specialty selection competencies. Creates and modifies workshops and presentations as necessary for student career development. Trains and maintains relationships with faculty advisors and mentors for Careers in Medicine Programs. Refines and develops new career and medical specialty advising/coaching services and counsels medical students and alumni on career options and opportunities. Provides staff support and guidance for the Medical Student Counsel and Medical Student Interest Groups. Collaborates with faculty across campus for summer research and externship opportunities for medical students. Works with the Student Affairs team to help organize and carry out major events and activities such as Residency Match, SOAP, Recruitment Day, Orientation Week, graduation ceremonies and various Medical Student Life events.
