We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced music teacher to join our school’s music program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in music education and teaching experience working with middle and high school students. This role involves designing and delivering music lessons, assessing student progress, and organizing musical performances that showcase students’ growth and talent.
The teacher will teach 2-3 music classes to include Rock Band, Intro to Rock Band, and music appreciation. The music teacher will develop engaging lesson plans and use instructional materials to meet diverse student needs. This position requires strong communication skills, the ability to manage student behavior, and a collaborative spirit to work with other school teachers and staff. Essential to this position is the ability to form respectful and trusting relationships with students in a small collaborative setting.
Key Responsibilities
As a music teacher, you will:
Develop lesson plans. Create and implement lesson plans that cover music theory, types of music, practical instruction with musical instruments, and performance.
Teach music classes. Lead engaging music classes in general music, vocal, and instrumental music that support students’ understanding of music fundamentals.
Assess student progress. Evaluate student performance and track student progress in areas such as rhythm, pitch, and instrumental skills.
Coordinate musical performances. Organize musical performances to provide students with opportunities to perform and showcase their skills.
Collaborate with colleagues. Work with other school teachers to plan interdisciplinary activities that incorporate music education.
Provide feedback. Offer constructive feedback to students and parents on areas of improvement and celebrate student achievements.
Maintain a positive learning environment. Establish a supportive learning environment that encourages creativity, respect, and a love for music.
Prepare instructional materials. Utilize a variety of instructional materials to accommodate diverse learning styles and promote music appreciation.
Engage in professional development. Participate in professional development and mentorship programs to stay updated on music education trends.
Qualifications and Skills
To be considered for the role of music teacher, candidates should have:
Education. A bachelor’s degree in music education, music theory, or a related field. A master’s degree or teaching credential is preferred.
Experience. Previous teaching experience in elementary school, middle school, or high school music programs.
Music skills. Proficiency in musical instruments and comprehensive knowledge of music theory and music appreciation. Experience in rock band performance is essential.
Communication skills. Strong communication skills for interacting with students, parents, and school teachers effectively.
Classroom management. Ability to manage student behavior and create a positive learning environment.
Interpersonal skills. Excellent interpersonal skills to connect with students, build rapport, and inspire their interest in music.
Organizational skills. Strong organizational skills to manage lesson plans, music curriculum, and event planning.
Flexibility. Adaptability to work with various grade levels and accommodate diverse student needs.
Professional development. Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with music education best practices.

The mission of Bayhill High School is to educate students with learning differences, focusing on their individual learning needs, with the goal of maximizing their inherent abilities and their potential to succeed. A small high school in Berkeley, CA, Bayhill provides a WASC accredited program, A-G approved course work to students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences. Our neurodiverse student body has average to above average intelligence, but struggle to learn in a large high school due to learning differences. Many of our students have strengths in the arts or sciences.
