Position Description
Brandeis seeks a Part-Time Middle School Theater Specialist to lead and grow our dynamic theater program. This educator will teach theater arts courses and direct the annual middle school musical and Purim Spiel, partnering closely with colleagues in music, production, and student life.
The successful candidate will bring strong theatrical expertise, a student-centered teaching philosophy, and a commitment to adolescent development. This role plays a vital part in helping students find their voice, take creative risks, and contribute meaningfully to our school community.
Teaching Load and Program Structure
This part-time position includes:
Two middle school theater courses:
Grades 5–6 (one hour)
Grades 7–8 (one hour) (Each course meets twice weekly, totaling four instructional hours per week.)
Direction of the annual middle school musical in collaboration with the Choral Music Director
Direction of the annual Purim Spiel
After-school and occasional weekend rehearsals during production seasons. After-school rehearsals are from 3:30-5:00, three days a week.
Close collaboration with faculty, staff, and parent volunteers
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
Designing and delivering engaging, developmentally appropriate theater instruction in:
Acting, voice, movement, and improvisation
Devised theater and basic playwriting
Ensemble work and basic choreography
Developing student-centered curriculum responsive to student interests and creative expression
Guiding and supporting student learning through differentiated instruction and constructive feedback
Assessing student growth and maintaining clear records of progress
Creating a classroom and rehearsal environment rooted in safety, respect, and inclusion
Collaborating with colleagues across disciplines to support students' academic, social, and emotional growth
Communicating professionally and consistently with students, families, and administrators
Participating in faculty meetings, school events, and professional responsibilities as appropriate

Qualifications
Background in theater and/or performing arts
Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
Minimum of three years of teaching experience, preferably with middle school–aged students
Demonstrated success working with adolescents
Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Warm, reflective, and professional presence
Commitment to inclusive, student-centered education
Physical Requirements
Ability to actively engage with students through movement, voice, and demonstration
Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs
Regular use of close and distance vision
Ability to work at a desk and computer
Ability to bend, reach, and occasionally use a ladder
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in typical San Francisco weather
Compensation and Benefits Brandeis offers competitive compensation based on experience and education. Benefits include medical, dental, life insurance, long-term disability, and retirement plans. The 60% FTE salary range is $48,578 - $65,000 annually, depending on education and years of teaching experience.
