Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) is the operational core of Stanford University's physical campus. The Mission of the Stanford University Grounds Services Department is to provide a beautiful and safe outdoor experience for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
We pride ourselves in being the in-house service of choice since the University began. We provide a stewardship role in the proper care of all outdoor facilities. We are prompt, efficient, and professional in appearance and duties. We "tailor make" our services and are immediately responsive to our diverse clientele.
We have an immediate position for a Tree Program Supervisor.
What you will do in this role:
Supervise and monitor one or more tree special crews in their daily activities.
Schedule and assign work to staff
Direct and lead workers in completing assigned work
Monitoring work and project activity progress and making necessary changes.
Records job site information and checks crew performance and records for accuracy and completeness
Assist in hiring and recruiting
Oversee performance management
Conduct annual performance evaluations and development planning and training
Support assigned project activities; ensure compliance with larger unit goals
Coordinate and facilitate health and safety programs and training like the monthly tailgate safety meetings and document incident reports as required
Track budget for area of responsibility, and provide time and workforce needs and estimates to higher level management based on cost analyses, ensuring work is completed according to stipulated price and agreement
Implement, interpret, and manage policies and procedures pertaining to operations and facilities management as well as assist in the development of policies and procedures
Manage service contracts as applicable and coordinate maintenance and repairs of assigned equipment and vehicles
Coordinate activities, of the horticultural trade, and renovation with Stanford staff, subcontractors, and/or vendors
Manage and facilitate waste disposal program for the tree crew
Assists the manager in determining specific tree care needs and work schedules.
Arranges pre-notification of public for work in areas on campus
Assists in determining tree maintenance work, coordinates operations with other University departments on cooperative projects
Inspects trucks, tools and equipment used by the tree crew and grounds maintenance, for safe condition and efficient operation, and coordinates necessary repairs
Other duties as assigned
To be successful in this role you must bring:
A combination of education, training and experience performing responsibilities similar to those listed above.
Minimum of 5 years in the arboricultural field and experience with managing and leading a tree crew.
Experience managing BU employees preferred
Must have knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance management.
Certified arborist preferred. If not certified must commit to obtain certification within 12 months of employment.
Principles of tree biology
TRAQ rating preferred
Demonstrate experience in materials, methods, practices and equipment usage in tree maintenance, planting, preservation and pest management activities.
Knowledge of principles of budget preparation and expenditure control.
Demonstrate experience of types and level of maintenance, planting, preservation and pest management activities generally performed in an urban forestry program.
Ability to manage occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work, including line clearance tree pruning
Demonstrate record keeping and reporting procedures, including computerized maintenance systems.
Ability to integrated pest management principles and techniques.
Knowledge and experience with pesticide application regulations pertaining to pesticide use in the urban forest.
Entrepreneurial methods and techniques used in the public sector.
Ability to manage contractual services.
Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license. Class A (CDL) license preferred.

Physical Requirements*:
Frequently sitting, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 11-20 pounds.
Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
Ability to drive day or night.

Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations.

Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The expected pay range for this position is $106,293 to $130,333 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs. At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package.
