Description
Roybal Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist
The Roybal lab is seeking a Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist to help us pursue an exciting project at the intersection of cell therapy, synthetic biology, and immunology. Our work involves high-throughput pooled screening of genetically engineered T-cells (CAR-T cells) for treatment of cancer and for the exploration of the biology of T cell signaling. This project will combine a variety of different technologies and techniques, including molecular biology, cellular immunology, mammalian cell culture, in vivo murine tumor models, and next-generation sequencing.
Your role would be to assist in carrying out this project, from experimental design and assay development to data analysis. You will assist lab members in the performance of laboratory and investigative procedures by performing a variety of experimental techniques such as PCR, plasmid prep and purification, molecular cloning, cell culture (cell lines and primary cells), in vivo murine tumor models, and flow cytometry. Prior experience with mouse tumor models, molecular cloning, DNA libraries, work with viral transduction, and experience with mammalian cell culture is ideal. The successful candidate should be able to learn new cell biological assays and execute them as necessary semi-independently. Data will need to be collected, verified, recorded, and compiled in support of research. Strong organizational and planning skills, ability to work in a dynamic and highly collaborative environment, and critical thinking are all important. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, and perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen.
Required Qualifications:
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience handling and dissecting mice and carrying out tumor measurements
• Prior experience in the design and assembly of DNA constructs (i.e. molecular cloning)
• Prior experience in mammalian cell culture techniques, including viral transduction
• Prior experience in preparing high throughput sequencing libraries and analyzing sequencing data
We are seeking at least a 1-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.
