POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of California, Merced invites applications for two new tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professors starting July 1, 2023. The department is interdisciplinary, highly inclusive, and is proud of the gender parity within its faculty. An emphasis is placed on excellence in teaching and education.
An Assistant Teaching Professor is a tenure-track faculty position with emphasis on undergraduate education. Candidates in all areas of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics Education, and related fields are encouraged to apply. In particular, we seek outstanding scholars who will establish, modernize, and maintain teaching programs in Applied Mathematics.
Responsibilities of this position include:
• Teach applied mathematics courses, with emphasis on lower-division courses (the expected teaching responsibility for this position is five courses per academic year);
• Engage in curriculum and program development, pedagogical innovation, and other scholarly and professional activities, for example, pedagogical research.
• Train graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate learning assistants;
• Participate in the development and assessment of innovative inclusive pedagogy in the classroom;
• Participate in education-related committees, outreach, and engaging in efforts to secure extramural funding for program development.
We are particularly looking for qualified candidates with
• demonstrated excellence in teaching;
• interest in developing innovative and interdisciplinary programs;
• record of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion;
• interest in mentoring teaching assistants and/or other teacher-training programs; and
• strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.
Qualifications: Qualified candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics Education, or a related field, and have had at least one year of teaching experience at the college or university level.
Candidates are requested to submit 3 letters of recommendation addressing candidate’s qualifications with particular emphasis on teaching abilities and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered, candidates must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics Education, or a related field by the position start date and a strong record of effective teaching at the college or university level.
