DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, the Tree Maintenance and Quality Control Supervisor plans, coordinates and supervises assigned staff in multiple phases of landscape operations and maintenance, particularly tree maintenance, and may provide supervisory support as needed in the areas of turf maintenance, horticulture, pest control, irrigation, equipment operation/maintenance, and landscape construction. Supervises, instructs and trains members of the Tree Crew, including Tree Trimmers and Tree Crew Laborers and occasionally other Facilities Management staff, in the use of equipment, work methods, new procedures and techniques of tree maintenance. Ensures that tree crew members are trained and proficient in current practices, standards and regulatory requirements.
Inspects trees for disease, noticeable hazardous conditions, and assists the Urban Forest Superintendent with maintaining campus tree inventory. Meets with internal and external customers to coordinate regular tree maintenance and initiates special requests as required. Determines when outside contractors must be utilized to augment department staff. Ensures that the tree crew has proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including fall protection, and are properly trained in its use. Oversees the inspection and maintenance of vehicles, tools, equipment and PPE, scheduling inspections and maintenance, and procuring equipment and supplies as needed. Inspects the team's work after completion of tree maintenance activities.
Oversees the installation and maintenance of campus flags and flagpoles by the Tree Crew Laborers, including replacement of flags as required and retiring them properly, as well as keeping track of Presidential Proclamations for lowering flags to half-mast. Receives predetermined work assignments that are subject to a moderate level of control and review. Works on issues of limited scope. Directs subordinates to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies. Requires full knowledge of own area of functional responsibility.
- May be required to work outside normal schedule for emergencies as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge in landscape/grounds keeping services. Experience (typically at least three (3) years of experience) in Tree Care Operations. Broad knowledge and work experience in management of all areas of Tree Care Operations and landscape maintenance in a large academic, hospital or commercial setting.
Strong leadership or supervisory experience planning and coordinating the work of others and maintaining solid productivity and high morale. Supervisory experience including, but not limited to recommending hires, promotions, classifications, progressive discipline, dismissal actions and evaluating performance. Experience effectively following operational and human resources practices.
Demonstrated ability to provide plant and pest identification. Specific knowledge of shrubs, trees and ground covers including growth characteristics, irrigation requirements, fertilization including trace minerals and diagnosis and treatment of infestation by noxious diseases and pests.
Proven knowledge of soil types and conditions and the ability to perform and/or interpret soil analysis. Ability to detect and identify pests and pathogens as well as contributing factors to their development.
Experience working within and following standard safety regulations, policies, and procedures typical to the trade. Knowledge of and experience using appropriate safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Knowledge and demonstrated experience with the proper and safe methods and equipment used in all aspects of Tree Care Operations.
Proven ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency or sensitive situations along with the ability to carry out work according to policies and procedures.
Experience demonstrated by skill to logically analyze complex situations and data. Demonstrated experience developing clear and concise reports or recommendations for management. Proven ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret data and provide an appropriate response.
