The Position
The mission of the Diversity and Access Office is to advance Stanford's commitment to diversity, equal opportunity, and affirmative action goals as well as to foster an inclusive and accessible community for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The Diversity and Access Office ensures University-wide compliance with federal, state, and local regulations concerning non-discrimination and disability access. The Director, Diversity and Access, in coordination and collaboration with University Human Resources where appropriate, will play an instrumental role developing a strategy to integrate the legal requirements with the university goals to further IDEAL and to generally help to shape the university's culture of inclusion.
Reporting
The Director reports to the Vice Provost for Institutional Equity, Access and Community, and Special Advisor to the President.
Responsibilities
The Director of the Diversity and Access Office (D&A):
- Advance Stanford's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion - including serving in a leadership role in developing initiatives in support of the vision of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access in a Learning environment (IDEAL) program.
- Lead the development of Stanford's affirmative action goals and, in coordination with the Office of the General Counsel, assist in ensuring Stanford's compliance with Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Age Discrimination and Employment Act, Executive Order 11246, the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), and the UNRUH Civil Rights Act, among other laws.
- Advise, liaise with, and provide administrative support to Affinity Groups / Employee Resource Groups collaborating and integrating these groups into Stanford's diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts.
- Supervise Administration of ADA/Section 504 student grievance procedures.
- Administer Student Non-Academic Grievance Procedure.
EEO/Affirmative Action and Diversity
The President of Stanford has assigned responsibility for Equal Employment Opportunity and the implementation of Affirmative Action Programs for Stanford to the Director whose responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, implement, and monitor an annual Affirmative Action Plan, prepare an annual report, and communicate the goals and potential areas for improvement to schools and business units.
- Assist schools and business units in preparing affirmative action programs and engaging in good faith efforts for the recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups.
- In coordination with University Human Resources, conduct adverse impact analyses of Stanford's employment processes including hires, promotions, and terminations.
- In coordination with University Human Resources, monitor Stanford's compensation practices to ensure equity.
- Ensure compliance with Stanford's nondiscrimination policy and administer the Student Non-Academic Grievance Procedure for complaints alleging discrimination on the basis of race, color, age, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, medical condition and physical or mental disability (Protected Categories). Interface with federal agencies including the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs ( OFCCP), Department of Justice (DOJ), and Department of Educations (OCR).
- Collaborate with Human Resources on the development of resources and networks to promote and increase the recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups.
- Create and implement a strategic vision for affinity groups / employee resource groups that establishes criteria, enhances the influence of and involvement of these organizations as university partners, engages with them in a manner that promotes overall diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and provides growth and development opportunities for the membership of these organizations.
ADA and Sections 503 and 504
Oversee and supervise employee with direct responsibility for:
- Assisting with developing information and training tools for Human Resources Managers with regard to the evaluation and provision of workplace accommodations for staff and faculty in accordance with the employment provisions of Title I of the ADA.
- Administer Stanford's ADA/Section 504 Grievance Procedure (Student), including investigating and resolving concerns and complaints alleging discrimination on the basis of disability.
- Respond to individual requests for removal of architectural barriers, which prevent program access or the equal employment of staff and faculty with disabilities.
- Provide technical assistance to Stanford's construction related departments including Land, Buildings and Real Estate Department, Facilities Operations and Residential and Dining Enterprises on the accessibility requirements of the ADAAG, Title 24 of the California State Building Code and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA).
- When appropriate, support the Office of the General Counsel in responding to civil and federal legal complaints alleging discrimination on the basis of disability in the workplace and places of public accommodation.
- Plan and coordinate disability access and respond to requests for accommodations for major Stanford events including Commencement, Parent's Weekend, Admit Weekend, Orientation and Homecoming.
Supervision
- Supervise Diversity and Access staff.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years working in an EEO and affirmative action compliance function. Experience in a higher education institution is highly desirable.
- Bachelor's degree required. Post-graduate education or qualification such as MA, Ph.D. or JD is highly desirable.

- Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse identities.
